It's fantastic to see so many new faces joining the wargame community. That's a great thing for the sport. However, for newcomers, choosing that first blaster can be a daunting task. This time, I'm breaking down some of the best entry-level blasters to help those just getting started. Since this is a guide for beginners, I'll be focusing on out-of-the-box performance and features, without diving into future upgrade paths.

Let's get into the breakdown.

AR-Platform Blasters

1. CYMA M4

The CYMA M4 is a classic and widely recommended entry point for a reason. It boasts solid external build quality with a split-receiver design and a faithful M4 aesthetic, making it a standout in its category. Out of the box, it features a metal outer barrel, nylon gears, and a nylon gearbox shell. It also comes with a basic hop-up unit. The charging handle is functional, and pulling it all the way back activates the mag prime feature. It has safe, semi, and full-auto fire modes, though it lacks a bolt catch or bolt release function. As it uses a standard V2 gearbox, it's an excellent platform for future cosmetic and internal modifications.

2. SJ HK416 (V2.0)

The SJ HK416 is a top contender for those wanting the 416 look. It comes in three versions (V1.0, V2.0, and V3.0), and I personally recommend the V2.0. This version offers an excellent out-of-the-box experience with features like a functional bolt catch, bolt release, and mag prime. The build includes small metal parts on the receiver, a metal charging handle, and an ambidextrous magazine release. It also comes with a set of metal iron sights. The external finish is well-done with a fine paint job, but be aware that it can scratch easily, so handle with care. The most noticeable external inaccuracy is that the mock bolt carrier uses a standard M4 design and lacks HK markings. Internally, it runs on nylon gears and achieves around 18 RPS on an 11.1v battery. However, its trajectory performance isn't ideal out of the box. I recommend stabilizing the inner barrel and adding a quality hop-up. For gameplay, engaging the bolt catch before starting is a good practice.

3. SJ M4 CQB

Think of this as a slight step up from the CYMA M4 in terms of features. It comes with a full set of small metal receiver parts, a functioning bolt release, and a bolt catch, making it highly versatile for attachments. However, its performance is a step down from the CYMA M4. The trajectory can be very difficult to tune, making this a better choice for players who prioritize the tactile feel and handling experience over pure performance.

4. Bohan (BH) SLR

The SLR is a competition-style rifle, but this version from Bohan feels a bit mismatched. It features a Crane-style stock and an MK8-style handguard that doesn't quite align with the receiver's aesthetic. The magazine design is also somewhat underwhelming. On the plus side, it includes small metal parts on the receiver and a metal inner barrel. The gearbox is equipped with metal gears and a metal-rack piston. It supports semi/full-auto fire, a bolt catch, and a functioning bolt release. However, Bohan's quality control can be inconsistent, and new blasters may have minor issues. I'd recommend looking for the newer batches, which have been updated with a Mini Tamiya connector.

5. Jinming (JM) M4A1 Gen 8

The Gen 8 is a legendary blaster in its own right. The entire body is plastic with a clamshell receiver design, and the overall build quality is basic. The handguard and stock use a Nerf-like attachment system that is prone to breaking. It has very few metal parts and no mock bolt carrier. However, its performance is surprisingly good, with a decent trajectory right out of the box. Just add a hop-up, and it's ready for the field. It's known for being incredibly durable—a true workhorse. In the context of 2025, it's not the top choice, but it remains a viable option for players on a very tight budget.

AK-Platform Blasters

1. AKA Series (A1/A4)

The AKA series offers four models: A1 (AKS-74U), A2 (AKM), A3 (AK-74M), and A4 (AK-105). They come with a full metal front assembly, metal fire selector, metal gears, and a metal-rack piston. The receiver build quality is excellent, seemingly reinforced with metal powder. The charging handle has a full travel distance. A wide variety of aftermarket parts are available. Due to inner barrel length considerations, I recommend the A1 (AKS-74U) and A4 (AK-105) models for a better performance balance. The stock performance is decent, and they offer significant potential for future upgrades.

2. Renxiang (RX) AK Series

The RX lineup includes the AK-47, AKS-47, AK-102, and AK-74M. These blasters feature metal inner and outer barrels, a metal fire selector, metal gears, a metal-rack piston, and a metal nozzle. The standout feature of the RX series is its blowback module, which provides a very satisfying, heavy recoil on full-auto. This creates an incredibly immersive handling experience. The trade-off is that the blowback vibration negatively impacts trajectory, making performance less than ideal. It's still perfectly usable for casual to medium-intensity games. Due to its proprietary gearbox design, upgrading the RX series is quite difficult. It's a blaster with a high floor but a low ceiling.

3. Double Bell (DB) / DSAK Series

This series, built on the original "Iron-Eater" AK molds, includes the AKM, AK-74, AKS-74U, AK-74M, AK-105, and AK-12. It improves upon the original with better details, like accurately modeled receiver pins. The blaster features a functioning bolt release and mag prime. It's equipped with metal inner and outer barrels, a metal rear sight block and sight, metal gears, a metal dust cover, a metal fire selector, and a metal T-piece. It's essentially an improved version of the Iron-Eater, fixing the notoriously poor bolt return. The trajectory is decent, but it can be picky with certain types of gels. As it uses a standard V3 gearbox, it is relatively easy to upgrade.

4. Jinming (JM) J12 AKS-74U

The J12 is arguably Jinming's masterpiece. It features a full nylon, split-receiver design—a significant step up from their old clamshell models. The body feels solid and robust, though the finish is average. It has nylon gears and few metal parts. A notable inaccuracy is that the fire selector markings are in English, not Russian. It performs well out of the box, and with a hop-up, it's field-ready. It's also very reliable and can run for extended periods on an 11.1v battery without issue.

Other Platforms

1. LeHui (LH) MP9

The LH MP9 has become a high-value option after a price drop. It features a nylon lower receiver, an ABS upper, a metal charging handle, and a metal mock bolt carrier. The charging handle has full travel and activates the mag prime, though there is no bolt hold-open feature. Internally, it has metal gears and a nylon-rack piston. A dedicated MP9 hop-up is available and greatly improves its trajectory. However, its V7 gearbox is complex, and any internal upgrades should be handled by an experienced technician.

2. Bingfeng (BF) P90

The BF P90 is a solid budget choice. It has a full nylon clamshell body, which is true to the real firearm's design. The exterior has a rubberized paint finish, though the application can be inconsistent. The build quality is average. It is full-auto only. Thanks to its top-feeding magazine, feeding issues can often be solved with a simple tap. It comes with nylon gears, a nylon-rack piston, and a metal inner barrel. This blaster has great potential but is best recommended for players with strong technical skills who enjoy tinkering.
